The Seven Deadly Sins

(Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.)


The Holy Bible mentions seven deadly sins. In the Catholic church they are know to be mortal sins and great vices as stated by St. Timothy. The seven deadly sins are not to be confused with Venial Sin and Mortal Sin. 


Q. What is sin?

Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines sin as:
  • 1 a : an offense against religious ormoral law
    b : an action that is or is felt to behighly reprehensible <it's a sin towaste food>
    c : an often serious shortcoming :fault
  • 2 a : transgression of the law of God
    b : a vitiated state of human naturein which the self is estranged fromGod

Q.  What is mortal sin? 


1.  Envy: (from Wikipedia) is anemotion which "occurs when a person lacks another's superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it".[1]

2.  Greed 

3.  Lust (from newadvent.com): The wrongfulness of lust is reducible to this: that venereal satisfaction is sought for either outsidewedlock or, at any rate, in a manner which is contrary to the laws that govern marital intercourse. 

4.  Pride (Vainglory) excessive pride in one's excellence. Withdrawing self from Almighty God due to pride in self. (Newadvent.com) 

5.  Gluttony: the excessive indulgence in food and drink. (NewAdvent.com)

6.  Wrath: the desire for vengeance. Sinful when it's wishes on someone who doesn't deserve it. (Newadvent.com)

7.  Sloth: (in general) "a disinclination to labor or exertion" (St. Thomas II-II:35) (newadvent.org)
