Admonish the sinner

The first spiritual work of mercy is to admonish the sinner. In the Catechism it shows how advising a person of a sin is an act of love.

I want to point out how the church allows you to advise a person about a sin he or she is about to commit. You want to open their eyes to the sin. Advise them to avoid the sin. And IF you make things worse by pointing things out DIRECTLY, then better to show the person indirectly. Huh? How? "Show by example". Model the behavior you want the person to do. It's the same thing parents, teachers, doctors/nurses, and police officers do (hopefully) every day.

So let's ask the question. Do you lead by example? Do you model appropriate/good behavior?

Did you notice anyone modeling behavior to you? How'd that feel? Better than being told? Or would you prefer to be told?

I took this photo from a website that is not my own. Unfortunately, in the pdf version the website name did not show up when I opened it in iBook.  In the end this is not my work. Closest responsibility would be the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Matthew 25:36-46

Matthew 25: 36-46

And when the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty.
And all nations shall be gathered together before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats:
And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left.
Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in:
Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me.
Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, and fed thee; thirsty, and gave thee drink?
And when did we see thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and covered thee?
Or when did we see thee sick or in prison, and came to thee?
And the king answering, shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.
Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry, and you gave me not to eat: I was thirsty, and you gave me not to drink.
I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you covered me not: sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.
Then they also shall answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee?
Then he shall answer them, saying: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it not to one of these least, neither did you do it to me.
And these shall go into everlasting punishment: but the just, into life everlasting.

The seven works of mercy-- corporal

Information on the corporal works of mercy can be found at both www.ewtn.org and Wikipedia. New advent encyclopedia will also have DETAILED information on the subject.

The corporal works of mercy deal with the physical life. How to help your fellow human being. In Matthew 25 Jesus is teaching his disciples how nations will be judged. Parameters were set by Jesus.

"Whatsoever you did to the least of my people, that you did unto me."  Did you feed me when I was hungry? Did you clothe me when I was naked? Did you give me drink when I was thirsty? Did you offer me shelter when I was homeless? Did you visit me when I was sick? Did you visit me when I was imprisoned? Did you bury my body after I died?

If you didn't help out your fellow human being how can you expect to enter into the kingdom of heaven?

Read Matthew 25 for the full knowledge.  Jesus wants us to do both spiritual and physical works of mercy. The Catholic Church helps us understand this in the catechism. We each have gifts given to us by GOD.

Also read the book of Tobit in the Old Testament.  Tobit does many of these works of mercy.

This Jesuit priest says it better than me. He describes both types of work of mercy. Then he describes how the catechism says giving alms to the poor is one of the more chief witnessing for Fraternal charity. It is also a work of justice pleasing to God.
