the Cross of Christ as the Center of Mercy

December 10, 2015

“There is but one center of mercy, one merciful event, in which we receive mercy and give it, or give it and receive it. This event is the saving mystery of the Cross, which alone enables us to enter into true spiritual harmony with one another, seeing one another not only in natural fellowship but in the Spirit and mercy of Christ.” (Thomas Merton) Does Merton’s idea of the Cross as the “center of mercy” resonate with you? How does the shadow of the cross change the way we see our neighbors? Christ, help me to put your Cross at the center of my Christ, that I might practice your merciful love.

2016: Works of Mercy

Pope Francis has deemed the Jubilee Year of 2016 as the year of Works Of Mercy.  During this year, which starts on November 2015 and ends on December 2016, His Holiness has stated that the CORPORAL Works of Mercy are to be especially focused on. Actual methods of helping our families, friends, neighbors, the poor, the marginalized, and the outcast are to be especially guided by the Corporal Works of Mercy.

The Corporal Works of Mercy is taken from Matthew 25:31-46??

Considering all the refugees and immigrants escaping civil war I see GOD in this. He's telling us (as always) to help our brothers and sisters, in Christ. We cannot turn a Blind eye! Too many innocent lives are at risk for death.  How we behave to those in trouble, GOD will judge.

Since my original write up, the pope has asked the churches to open their doors to the Syrian refugees. The Vatican, itself, has, or it will, take in two families. Each church is to take in at least one refugee family.

This Jesuit priest says it better than me. He describes both types of work of mercy. Then he describes how the catechism says giving alms to the poor is one of the more chief witnessing for Fraternal charity. It is also a work of justice pleasing to God.
